He took a leadership role in many classics organizations, the Classical Association of New York State, The Classical Association of the Atlantic States, and the American Classical League. He was awarded a Meritus award for his contributions to the profession, and upon retirement was given an Ovatio, an award and a ceremony marking not only his contributions to the profession, but the strong personal impact he had on a generation of students and colleagues.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 15, 11AM, at the First Presbyterian Church of Phillipstown, 10 Academy St. Cold Spring NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Presbyterian Senior Care. You may sign the family’s guest book at www.cremationfuneralcare.com.

As the Romans carved on their tombstones: Sit ei terra levis. May the earth rest lightly on you, dear Bill.
