UPDATE:

An apparent combination of circumstances led to a widespread water outage in the hamlet of Carmel Thursday.

Water was interrupted around 9:50 a.m.–the same time a car fell into a sinkhole on Willow Road adjacent to the Putnam Bike Trail off Route 6–temporarily trapping a woman inside.

Police and firefighters rushed to the scene and freed the woman who was not injured.

The Town of Carmel Engineering Department said at the same time, unaware of the mishap, maintenance personnel began flushing hydrants in the Route 301–Glenvue area of town which exacerbated the situation.

Water began trickling out of faucets throughout the hamlet around 11 o’clock. The town spokesman said water volume should return to normal by early afternoon.
