Massive traffic tie-ups were the result of an out-of-state tractor trailer operator failing to heed a warning sign while driving his big rig beneath a trestle on Route 311 in Patterson on Tuesday.

The impact resulted in the large truck becoming wedged beneath the old railroad bridge forcing the closing of Route 311 from Route 164 to Cornwall Hill Road.

Hundreds of vehicles traveling from the Carmel-Kent area to the south and from the Patterson-Pawling area to the north were inconvenienced by the closure.

No injuries were reported.

Patterson FD personnel and its Fire Police team under the direction of Lt. John Bodor assisted Brewster State Police with traffic control until Lisi's Towing Company of Brewster and its heavy duty operator Eric Peters removed the truck in a painstakingly slow process.

Traffic was detoured for over four hours.
